{"id":11180,"date":"2025-07-29T01:14:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T01:14:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.seafdec.id\/?p=11180"},"modified":"2025-07-29T01:14:19","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T01:14:19","slug":"improving-inland-fish-biomass-estimation-with-hydroacoustics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teswordpres2.seafdec.id\/?p=11180","title":{"rendered":"Improving Inland Fish Biomass Estimation with Hydroacoustics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11181 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seafdec.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Template-Medsos-logo-seafdec-jtf-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>As part of efforts to support sustainable management of inland fisheries, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD), led by Deputy Chief Toru Shimoda and team, conducted field research under the project titled \u201cEnhanced Research Capacities for Sustainable Utilization and Management of Eel and Other Inland Fisheries Resources.\u201d This initiative is funded by the Japan Trust Fund (JTF) VII Program for the 2025\u20132029 period.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">From 23 to 24 July 2025, the team conducted a hydroacoustic survey at Dok Krai Dam Reservoir in Rayong Province, Thailand. The 1,200-hectare reservoir was selected for its ecological significance and active inland fisheries. Using a portable SIMRAD EY60 echosounder operating at 200\u202fkHz, and with support from the Department of Fisheries (DoF) Thailand, the team collected high-resolution acoustic data to estimate fish biomass non-destructively and in a standardized manner.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">On 25 July 2025, researchers held a data\u2011processing and evaluation meeting. They reviewed hydroacoustic outputs, outlined analytical procedures, and discussed reporting strategies and dissemination. The session also facilitated technical discussions and capacity building among participants.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The primary aim of this initiative is to refine hydroacoustic survey methods to improve the accuracy of inland fisheries biomass estimation. It also seeks to strengthen the technical capabilities of SEAFDEC member countries in conducting stock assessments\u2014contributing to science-based resource management, food security, and better livelihoods for communities dependent on inland fisheries.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Representatives from SEAFDEC\/IFRDMD, SEAFDEC\/Training Department, and Thailand\u2019s Department of Fisheries participated in these activities.
